Advent With Kids

I love this advent calendar/reading/teaching ish . . . .




1. Quarter--A quarter equals 25 cents! 25 also stands for the number of days till Christmas, when we celebrate God giving us His best present. What kind of gifts can we give to God? Jesus told a story about one woman's gift and the way she gave it. Read: Mark 12:41-44

2. Raisins –These are made from dried up grapes. Do you know what else is made from grapes? Juice and wine are! But Jesus didn't need grapes to perform His first miracle. Read: John 2:1-11

3. Small Bell--You could make some noise with this! But it would not have bothered a certain man--until he met Jesus. Read: Mark 7:31-37.

4. Swedish Fish candy--Well, if you were surprised to find these fish, wait till you read the story today! Others were surprised to find fish, too. Read: Luke 5:1-11.

5.  Birthday Candle—We put candles on birthday cakes, and As you know, we are getting ready to celebrate Jesus' birthday. However, Jesus talked about something else that is related to a candle. Light! Read: Matthew 5:14-16.

6. Bird Ornament—Do you think a little bird like this worries about where it will sleep or what it will eat? Jesus used a story about birds to teach us a lesson about trusting him. Read: Matthew 6:25-27.

7. Goldfish Crackers--These would not go very far if you were really hungry! But Jesus could make a lot out of a little. He even fed a whole crowd from one little boy’s lunch! Let’s read: Matthew 14:13-21.

8. Snow globe ornament—When you shake this up, you can make a tiny snowstorm! But it’s not a real storm, is it? Who really controls the weather? Let’s read: Luke 8:22-25.

9. Piece of Map—What do people use maps for? That’s right, finding their way! Jesus said he was the Way, what do you think he meant? Let’s read: John 14:1-6.

10. Bandaid –We use bandaids when we have a little cut or scratch, to protect the skin and help it heal. But Jesus didn’t need bandaids, or even a doctor to heal people. Let’s read about some of the amazing miracles of healing Jesus did: Luke 8:40-56

11. Hershey’s Kisses. These little chocolates are called kisses – we use kisses to show one another our love, don’t we? How did God show his love to us? Read: John 3:16-18.

12. Shell – Where does this come from? That’s right, the ocean! Did you know that the Bible says that no matter where you go – even to the depths of the sea, where this shell came from, God knows and sees you? You can never be too far away for him to love and watch over you! Let’s read Psalm 139:7-16

13. Sand—This sand is soft and slippery – does it make a good foundation for a house? No way! Jesus told a story about houses and foundations, but really he was talking about our lives. Let’s read the story, then you tell me what the solid foundation is supposed to be. Matthew 7:24-29.

14. Small piece of gold jewelry - Wow, gold, Do you think of treasure when you see that? Jesus talked about the kind of treasure we should be seeking, and it’s not gold. What do you think it is? Let’s read Matthew 6:19-21

15. Berry shaped candy -  Yum, this candy looks like some of our favorite fruits – raspberries and blackberries!  These berries grow on vines, don’t they? Jesus said that he is the true vine, and told us how we can produce good fruit by staying connected to him. What do you think he meant? Read: John 15:1-5.

16. Nuts –Nuts are a kind of seed, did you know that? Jesus told a story about seeds that a man planted, some grew well and some didn’t. Why do you think that was? Let’s read: Matthew 13:3-8 and18-23.

17. Musical Note Ornament—This a musical note, which is used to sing a song! Let’s sing a Christmas song of praise to Jesus together, after reading what the Bible says about praising God: Psalms 100.

18. Rock--A hard stone! Can you change this stone into a piece of bread? Do you think Jesus could? Jesus was asked to do just that. Do know how He handled it? Read: Matthew 4:1-11.

19. Saltwater Taffy – This candy is called saltwater taffy – salt can make even sweet things taste more delicious! do you know what Jesus said about us and salt? Let’s Read: Matthew 5:13.

20. Small vial of water – This is just plain water! We drink it every day, but what would happen if we didn’t have it? We’d be so thirsty! Jesus once helped a woman get the water she needed to drink, but told her about another kind of water that would quench her thirst forever. Let’s read John 4:4-26

21. Dove—Do you know what the dove is a symbol for? Peace! Why do you think that is? Read: Matthew 3:13-17.

22. Mini Candy Canes—Do you know what these candy canes are supposed to look like? Shepherd’s crooks! Jesus called Himself the good shepherd. Do you know who His sheep are? Read: Luke 15:4-7.

23. Thorn – Feel this thorn, it’s really sharp isn’t it? This thorn reminds us of why Jesus was born onto Earth, and it wasn’t just to heal people and do miracles. Read: Matthew 27:27-31.

24. Soap or sponge – You could use this to wash your skin. But would it clean you on the inside? All your sin and naughty thoughts and deeds? Jesus taught us about how to really get clean. Let’s read Mark 7:1-23

25. Baby pictures of the kids –Look at you when you were babies – weren’t you cute? When you all were born, You brought so much joy to our family. Jesus was born a tiny baby, too. He came to bring Joy to the whole world! Read: Luke 2:1-20. Enjoy your celebration today. Continue to learn about Jesus--and love Him forever!

(In the absence of Swedish fish for #4) Fish Hook – We could use this fish hook on the end of a line to catch some fish! But Jesus once asked his disciples to be fishers of men – what do you think he meant by that? Let’s read: Luke 5:1-11
