One of the wonderful things about not being in the corporate world anymore is that my wardrobe no longer has to be black and sleek and edgy and well, corporate! I get to dress however I want, I no longer have to impress clients. I can be fun, happy, colorful, casual, spunky - whatever I want! It also helps that Ryan doesn't have the typical taste in women's clothes as some men, thus I don't feel pressured to dress like a seductive hooch :o) YAY!
I was pointed towards a blog called Ain't No Mom Jeans. It has been wonderful. I know that clothing and style does not come naturally to me (similarly to cooking, I did some very formative growing-up years when it was just me and my Dad). The blog recommended the following process for determining your style:
1. Everywhere you go, find images, or snap photos of clothing and outfits you LOVE! Don't think about whether you could ever pull it off, or if its for your body type, just collect things you love.
2. As you go through those images, try to pull out 5 adjectives that describe that type of style.
(What I think is hilarious is that I do almost the EXACT same thing with my interior design clients - i just never imagined applying the same principles to personal style!)
So far, I have collected the following words:
1. Colorful (this implies a related word, "Happy")
2. Comfortable (also loosely related to "Sporty")
3. Feminine
I don't have my other two words yet, but they have all come slowly and surely. Its been wonderful to take my words shopping and check every purchase against my new "mission statement" :o)
I found a cute pair of shorts that were comfortable, but not feminine. I said no! Yay :o) It really did help in making my decisions.
So there it is. I'm nowhere near where I want to be, but piece by piece, I'm becoming a tad bit more stylish, and happy about it!
Favorite quote from the Ain't No Mom Jeans blog:
"Ignoring trends year after year after year is exactly how you wake up one morning, 20 years later, with a permed mullet and legwarmers wondering why everyone else looks so different."
